Families interested in virtual education may be experiencing some confusion over choosing a virtual school or program. With over 100 virtual schools in Kansas, this model has been an option for more than 18 years. Remote Learning models are new and operate quite differently than a virtual school.
When considering a virtual program it will be helpful to understand the difference.
During the Pandemic the remote learning model was created to connect with students to educate them at home. In the remote learning model a teacher conducts lessons directly with students in real time (synchronous learning) and includes a daily attendance component. The state currently allows minimal hours for remote learning as students have transitioned back to local school sites.
Virtual Schools provide the learning resources necessary to conduct instruction at home, with the support of distance learning technologies and direct instructional sessions (asynchronous and synchronous learning opportunities). MVPS also provides a certified teacher, printed materials, course manipulatives, a chromebook on loan and additional online learning programs, as needed.
As parents weigh in on virtual school possibilities, it is helpful to consider what works best for each student. The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) Virtual School and Programs webpage will help navigate the possibilities.
Differences in Remote and Virtual Learning
Virtual Learning
- Student is provided state approved coursework through a virtual program or school,
not necessarily in their home district. - Instruction & Curriculum – Asynchronous or Synchronous –
students and parents are provided a digital learning platform with hands-on materials; students across the state may participate - Teacher – Student Connection – learning sessions and conferences are scheduled with teacher.
Teacher responds to questions in 24 hours or less. - Enrollment – Students can enroll in a state approved program, outside of their district. Two count days are required by the state.
Remote Learning
- Student is enrolled in their area school; attended remotely with instruction provided/supervised by local teachers and staff.
- Instruction & Curriculum – Synchronous Learning, provided directly from teachers in the student’s district
at specific times during the school day. - Teacher Student Connection – Students must engage with at least one teacher on a daily basis through phone,
conferencing or direct online instruction. - Enrollment – Student enrolls in their home district, attendance is part of the district requirements through
attendance of a live session or a log.
