When students develop a love of learning, research shows students are more likely to become life-long learners. According to Psychology Today, Cultivating a Lifelong Love of Learning in the 21st Century,
“Children who harbor a love for learning are more inclined to find success in their academic pursuits. Their inherent motivation to learn drives them to persevere through challenges, leading to enhanced academic performance and higher levels of achievement.” – Psychology Today (March 2023)
MVPS has a focus to help students find their love of learning. How is this accomplished?
At MVPS families develop their love of learning through multiple avenues.
1. Hands-on Learning
As part of each student’s curriculum, a History Kit or Lap Book, Science Kit or Math Manipulatives may be utilized. This provides an opportunity for students use multiple learning modalities. And, it is an exciting way to learn.
2. Develop a Growth Mindset
Sometimes younger students are leery of trying a new skill. We encourage students to embrace “The Power of Yet”. This concept allows students to have a growth mindset by knowing they will some day learn the skill. They just have not learned it yet!
Older students are taught to view mistakes as OTL’s – or Opportunities to Learn. OTL’s promote risk taking and a healthy view of trying and re-trying tasks. Suddenly there is a mind shift from a mistake to an opportunity.
3. Individual Learning Plans (K-8) or Individual Plans of Study (8th Bridge – 12th)
Every student at MVPS has an individualized plan. This plan includes grade level curriculum, along with individualized resources, to help students grow and learn. No two students will have the same exact plan!
4. Encourage Choice and Variety
Students are more vested and excited about learning when choices are made available. For example, parents may ask K-8 students which subjects they might like to start their learning with each day. K-12 students may be given options of where to complete school, at a kitchen table or a couch. MVPS also provides creative clubs, fieldtrips across Kansas, and a technology club for students to participate in.
5. Families Create a Rhythm of Learning
Students thrive with predictability and structure. When schooling at home, a wonderful rhythm of learning is easy to create. This might be accomplished through planned learning blocks throughout the day. Block teaching allows for a natural ebb and flow in learning. It also reduces the feeling that a strict schedule is necessary to be successful. There are many ways to plan for learning at home! Parents are encouraged to experiment and discover what works best for them.
At MVPS we are excited about learning and look forward to the opportunity to partner with you and your family.
